At age 8, my uncle, a scholar, told me I was writing well. At age 28, my PhD jury told me so, too. Over the years, I wrote articles, columns, textbooks at work, family speeches and eulogies on weekends. The columns were known, one of the books became a bestseller, and the family cried. I kept writing.
I now have more time and experience to move to creative writing. This website is a new beginning. Be ruthless, be honest. I have a thick skin, and I love feedback.
Five years ago, in the middle of a rush to send a manuscript, I promised my younger kids, Tristan and Talitha, that my next book would be a children's book. They are teenagers now, and they don't care anymore. Still, I wanted to keep my promise: Talitha became Tempest, and Tristan became Wallace in "Tempest and Pompon", my middle-grade book in progress.
Other adult short stories will follow, but I only share this one for now. I would be most grateful for your views. Please subscribe if you are interested in the print. All proceeds will go to a children's education centre in Cambodia (www.enfantsdeklangleu.org)
Tempest & Pompon is about an 11-year-old girl with a buoyant imagination who braves her fears of the outside world and surmounts multiple obstacles to chase her dream of owning a pet cat to cherish as her best friend because brave kids never give up. She’s helped by her little brother Wallace, who always sees the bright side of life.
In her quest, she comes to realise that people are not always as they seem, that she can make friends, and that funky old people are natural allies of children, sharing a world of poetic imagination, eccentricity, and the delight of being alive.
